Andalusian olive groves, one of the pillars of Spain’s agri-food sector and a key component of southern Europe’s cultural landscape, are taking a major step toward sustainability thanks to the integration of smart technologies for pest detection and control. The OLIVAR Operational Group—formed by Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias de Andalucía, Universidad Loyola, Fundación Ayesa, and Opracol Sevilla—has developed an innovative solution based on computer vision, artificial intelligence (AI), and smart sensors that enables automated, accurate, and real-time monitoring of the olive grove’s health status.
This technology represents a true revolution in Integrated Pest Management (IPM), replacing manual human observation—which is slow, costly, and less precise—with automated systems capable of detecting the presence of pest insects such as the olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae) or the olive moth (Prays oleae), through digital analysis of images captured by smart cameras distributed throughout the field. The data generated by these devices is processed by AI algorithms trained to reliably identify pest species, their life cycles, and their distribution within the plot.
Precision Agriculture in the Service of Sustainability
Thanks to this tool, farmers can make faster decisions based on objective data, applying phytosanitary treatments only when and where they are truly needed. This significantly reduces the use of chemical products, improves soil health, decreases water pollution, and protects the biodiversity associated with olive cultivation.
This precision agriculture approach not only benefits the environment, but also increases the productive and economic efficiency of farms. Unnecessary treatments are avoided, costs are reduced, and crop losses due to undetected pest attacks are minimized. Moreover, it improves the traceability and quality of the resulting olive oil, which positively impacts the competitiveness of the product in international markets that are increasingly demanding in terms of sustainability.
The project’s success demonstrates that technology transfer to the primary sector is possible when scientific knowledge, hands-on field experience, and institutional commitment come together. These kinds of digital solutions pave the way for a new generation of olive growers and cooperatives—more digital, more sustainable, and better prepared to face the challenges of climate change and food security.
A Scalable Model Aligned with European Objectives
The technological solution driven by the OLIVAR Operational Group has an impact that goes beyond Andalusia: its modular, scalable, and adaptable design allows for implementation in other olive-growing regions across the Mediterranean. In addition, it aligns with the principles of the European Union’s “Farm to Fork” Strategy, which promotes sustainable food systems, and with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to responsible production, climate action, and the protection of life on land.
With this initiative, olive groves reinforce their role as a strategic crop not only in economic terms, but also in environmental and cultural dimensions. Investing in the smart digitalization of agriculture is not just an investment in innovation—it is a commitment to the future of rural territories and the well-being of future generations.
