The University Research Institute for Olive Grove and Olive Oils (INUO) at the University of Jaén will organize the International Conference on Sustainability in Olive Cultivation (ICSOC 2025) on September 25th and 26th. The event will take place at the Congress Center of the ‘Hospital de Santiago’ in Úbeda and will feature the participation of prominent scientists from around the world, addressing a range of topics related to sustainable olive growing and olive oil production. The conference is part of the INUOlive program for research promotion and dissemination, as outlined in its 2024–2027 Strategic Plan.
The event will present the latest research and projects focused on sustainable olive cultivation and olive oil production. Topics to be addressed include: soil health and land degradation processes; biodiversity conservation and related ecosystem services; pest control strategies; the effects of climate change and responses to abiotic stress; efficient water resource management; optimization of production processes and improvement of oil quality; as well as energy efficiency, carbon management, and the use of by-products.
The conference commissioner, Antonio Manzaneda professor in the University of Jaén and researcher at Ecology Unit of the INUO, states that the aim of the event is to explore innovative solutions through a holistic and multidisciplinary approach. “By bringing together leading researchers and experts from the sector, we can work towards the shared goal of achieving sustainable olive oil production, both in Europe and beyond” he explains. Manzaneda emphasizes that the sector is facing major sustainability challenges that could have lasting effects on food security. “The pressures of intensification, climate change, and growing market demands must be addressed now to ensure the future of this essential product for Europe, its trading partners, and the people who depend on it” he concludes.
In this regard, the conference will provide a space for researchers and students to present the results of their scientific work, either through oral presentations or poster sessions. The program will also include thematic roundtables, olive oil tasting sessions, and various social activities—all designed to promote academic exchange and collaboration among participants. Beyond knowledge exchange, attendees will have access to specialized resources, strategic networking opportunities, and the chance to actively contribute to the development of future scientific and academic collaborations.
