SINGLE-PACK, A NEW BIODEGRADABLE SINGLE-DOSE CONTAINER THAT IS COMMITTED TO THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE OLIVE OIL VALUE CHAIN

Acesur is leading the Single-Pack project, in collaboration with AINIA, which aims to revolutionise the packaging process of olive oils and sauces, through the development of 100% paper single-dose packaging, completely biodegradable and without any plastic derivatives among its components.

This initiative is based on the importance of single-dose packaging during the pandemic, as it provided greater hygiene and food safety for consumers when choosing foods such as olive oils and sauces in the HORECA channel. In addition, society is increasingly demanding easy-to-prepare foods where single-dose packs are commonplace, which has led to an upturn in the use of this type of packaging.

Acesur assures that “to date, the single-use packaging on the market is characterised by being made of plastic or, in the best of cases, paper, incorporating a thin sheet of flexible plastic inside to guarantee the preservation and hermeticity of the product“. For this reason, Acesur’s R&D team, led by Melchor Martínez, has set out to improve this situation with the Single-Pack project, co-financed by the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), which aims to research and develop innovative multiple coatings that do not use plastics but which, when applied to paper, provide resistance to grease, act as a barrier to oxygen and have the necessary sealing capacity to guarantee the correct preservation of foodstuffs.

In addition, he stresses that “with the Single-Pack project we aim to become the first company to market our oils and sauces in a single-dose pack made entirely from paper, which is recyclable in the blue container as well as biodegradable“. In fact, Acesur highlights that “the company understands the importance of tackling environmental challenges and seeks creative and sustainable solutions to reduce its impact on the planet. The Single-Pack initiative seeks to promote a significant change in the packaging industry, encouraging the adoption of environmentally friendly solutions“.

Ultimately, Melchor Martínez confirms that this project ends in August 2024 and on that date the launch of 100% paper single-dose packaging, recyclable in the blue container and compostable, “will be a reality with which to contribute to the care of the planet and with which to approach a consumer who is increasingly socially and environmentally aware“.
